The science floor

The road is measurable

AnOmbak's design rules trace to a government directive, a traffic index, an agency inventory, a ring-road physics experiment and a licence agreement's fine print — the evidence for why a Malaysian nav app must own its stack, show its grey, and do its physics honestly.

What the record actually says

One policy shock, one measured commute cost, one honest inventory, one physics experiment, one licence clause and one number that defines the whole product problem.

A sovereign opening, issued by the state

Malaysia's National Security Council banned civil servants from using Waze over data-security and foreign-jurisdiction concerns; the PM publicly urged the local alternative. Waze rejected the claims — but the policy fact stands: the state has declared that where road data lives is a national question. That is a mandate for infrastructure Malaysia owns, and a warning about building on rented foreign maps.

43.4%

The cost of the commute, measured

Kuala Lumpur's congestion level ran at 43.4% in 2025 — average speeds of 33.5 km/h and roughly 84 hours a year lost to traffic per driver. This is not a feature request; it is a national time tax, and it is the reason live road intelligence is worth building rather than licensing.

Malaysia has the sensors, and never the glue

KL's command centre runs AI traffic analytics and adaptive signals on an RM42m contract; the highway authority's cameras feed a public app; operators run their own control rooms. Yet not one open, machine-readable, per-segment road-flow API exists — the output of all that sensing ends at control-room eyeballs and video streams. Inventory done, fusion missing.

Jams with no cause are physics, and physics is detectable

Put 22 cars on a featureless 230 m ring, ask everyone to hold 30 km/h, and a stop-and-go wave still forms — one small braking perturbation amplifies upstream as a shockwave. A later Berkeley run showed one car with the right cruise-control tuning can damp the wave for all 20. The lesson AnOmbak takes seriously: hazards and queues have a measurable kinematic signature that moves against traffic.

§3.2.3

The shortcuts are illegal, and the fine print knows it

Google's terms bar caching and derivative datasets; Waze's city programme is a public-authority-only barter with a non-negotiable agreement — some US states can't even join, and partners may not hand the feed on. There is no lawful seam to ride a giant's crowd. The only honest external accelerator is a paid, licensed, short-TTL feed — a scaffold, never the moat.

The density trap is the real product problem

A crowd-sourced traffic map needs samples faster than they decay, or it renders nothing. Below five observations inside forty-five minutes, an honest engine shows grey — and a young app full of grey looks broken next to an incumbent full of colour. Every design choice downstream exists to break this trap without lying: scaffolds that retire, physics that speaks softly, presence that pools.

So AnOmbak is built this way

from: 5 / 45 min

Grey is honest; paint is borrowed

The honesty gate is constitution, not styling: colour appears only where samples earned it, and provenance badges say whose truth you are looking at — Community, Live traffic, Typical. A user who sees grey sees the same thing the engine sees.

from: Oct 2026

Sovereignty is architecture, not marketing

Own gateway, own routing engine, own geocoder, own tile server, in-country data plane, no account needed to navigate, no third-party SDKs tracing the drive. The Oct 2026 ban is why this is a build requirement: a “Malaysian” app on a foreign map is a landlord's tenant.

Fuse what exists before sensing from scratch

Agency CCTV analytics, adaptive signals and operator incidents enter fusion as authority sources — Malaysia's ITS estate becomes day-one coverage on instrumented corridors, while the crowd supplies density on every other road. Improve existing infrastructure, literally.

Physics before thresholds

A hazard alert must be a space-time pattern a wave model admits — brakes forming a line propagating upstream against traffic, scored against a permutation null — not “three cars braked near each other.” Benign explanations (signals, school runs, toll queues) are computed first and must lose. That is how a system cries wolf exactly never-by-construction.

from: §3.2.3

Rent scaffolds, never the map

Licensed feeds are polled on demand, cached for minutes, never stored as a derivative dataset — and every poll stops where the crowd becomes self-sufficient. Cost shrinks as trust grows: the dependency is designed, from day one, to be outgrown.

from: Oct 2026 + the trap

Crowd-sensed, individual-anonymous

Presence is ephemeral and never a trajectory; observations coarsen before they are stored; the minimum-peer gate means the system sees corridors, not people. The privacy posture is the exact inverse of the model that got the incumbent banned.

Why here, why now

The Malaysian numbers

84 h
lost per driver, per year, in KL

TomTom's 2025 measure of the congestion tax. Every second of reroute latency and every grey road that should be red is priced against this number.

33 cams
highway CCTV the state already runs

Plus a city-scale AI signal system on a RM42m contract. The hardware is funded; the exposure as data is the missing product — and it is AnOmbak and AnTIE's, not another agency's.

66
builds shipped, device-verified

From v0.1.0 to v0.1.36, each capability on this site traced to a changelog entry verified on real hardware against the production origin — including the honest gaps, which are listed, not hidden.

30 s
live bus positions, already open data

Malaysia publishes GTFS-Realtime vehicle positions under CC BY 4.0 every thirty seconds. Day-one transit intelligence exists today, waiting for an engine honest enough to compute the ETAs the feed doesn't give.

A Monday, honestly described

7:42 on the Federal Highway: the map is amber where ten thousand commutes earned it, and one stretch stays grey because nobody has driven it recently enough to say — the app knows the difference and shows it. Upstream, a line of brakes forms a pattern the wave model admits and the mapped junction does not, so AnOmbak asks rather than asserts; three answers confirm, and the colour arrives before the queue is visible. A courier claims a run by QR and never leaves the app that sequenced it. At the bus stop, a countdown computed from open data tells the truth about a bus the state already tracks. Nothing was scraped, nothing was guessed, nothing about any driver was kept.

The engine proven on this stack is exactly what AnTIE proposes to pool nationally.
