RTL-native from day one: lessons from building Masrif

Right-to-left is not a CSS flip. Designing an Arabic-first experience shaped how we build everything at Antrex — typography, layout physics, and motion.

Masrif speaks Arabic before it speaks anything else. Building RTL as a first-class citizen — not a late-stage toggle — changed our entire design system: logical properties everywhere, mirrored motion curves, and typography that respects the mushaf tradition.

Logical properties, physical layouts die

We banned margin-left in favor of margin-inline-start, and padding-right became padding-inline-end. The discipline pays double: our layouts now handle any writing direction without conditional code.

Motion has direction too

A slide-in from the left means 'forward' in LTR — and 'back' in RTL. Our animation tokens are direction-aware, so micro-interactions read naturally in both languages.

Typography is theology

Quranic text rendering has centuries of scholarly convention behind it: harakat spacing, waqf marks, tajweed color coding. We treated the mushaf renderer as sacred infrastructure — pixel-reviewed against printed references at every breakpoint.
